Felines Fear "aka Jameson" made his long awaited debut this evening at Monmore. With four of the syndicate present he came away from traps in reasonable fashion to chase hard the eventual winner. He showed some reasonable pace and appeared to be trying his best to finish a good second. He has a very strange action, a giraffe sprinting rang a bell! He did seem to tire off the last bend and did fade after the line. Part 2 next week. In summary, a promising debut but won't be winner any Derbys ! We have 5 passes which each admits 2 people. I have allocated 1 to Foxy and 1 to Heather and they are likely to attend more than most. Please just mail me when you would like a pass.

Jameson (Felines Fear) finished 2nd this morning in his final qualifying trial at Monmore. Most importantly his time was 30.14 which is a qualifying time to start racing. Running from trap 2 he was slow away from traps, bumped at the second bend and ran on to sneak inside qualifying. He could make his debut as early as Saturday however more likely is a week on Thursday.

Raynes Park (Droopys Kewell x Quare Diamond) landed the £2,000 Ladbrokes Summer 480 Final for bitches this afternoon at Monmore. Trained by our long term trainer Martin Burt she was quickly in to her stride she was not headed as she flew round in 28.31. Foxy and I both invested her as ante-post odds of 14/1!! Juicy ! Our luck continues !

Jameson Improves

Jameson showed rapid improvement in his second trial clocking 30.28, an improvment of 60 spots. He now only needs to improve slightly to grade on next Tuesday. I will post Tuesday's important trial news as soon as possible.

Ian Greaves Retires

Sad to read that Ian Greaves has been forced to retire from the sport following health advice. The Greaves School of Excellence has produced a number of high quality dogs including Top Savings, Toms the Best and Greenacre Lin to name a few. All pups and broods are currently being sold off as the operation draws to an end. I'm very surprised the whole business and facility where not sold off together. Perhaps it was just an investment to big for any one person or perhaps it points out to the long term future of the sport.

Jameson clocked 30.90 on his first outing at Monmore last Tuesday. Given his lack of experience and fitness a slow time was expected. According to the lads he looked very green in his running style. Needing to record 30.20 to start to race a Monmore, he should improve a great deal this Tuesday.

It was great to see the Chris Allsopp trained Centaur Allstar take the Scurry Final live on Sky tonight in 15.10. Chris text me straight after the race to thank me for selling the dog off his website about 2 months ago. It's a great bit of publicity for the hard working kennel who put in alot of hours in to the dogs and on the road seeking open race winners. Well done to all.

The Jimmyin Boys latest recuit arrived last week having being reared superbly by Paul McCusker. He has had a few small niggles along the way but has arrived in A1 condition with plenty for Martin to work on. He appears to have settled in well and very much enjoyed his walk with Paul, the kids and myself in beautiful weather on Sunday. Please let me know if you would like to walk him on any Sunday.

Kinda Ready - Derby Champion

Both Foxy and I have had some cracking ante-post winners this year but neither of us really expected Kinda Ready to win the Greyhound Derby on Saturday night. We were very happy with the place money and I'd had a £5 a 20/1 on Fear Zafonic that that was my own interest other than the hope Mark Wallis could get him round the first two corners trouble free. I had £3.50 EW and Foxy £2.50 EW Monmore . What a performance! I think people had forgot this dog did a sub 28.50 1st look at Monmore and also recorded a 28.00 run. Even approaching the last turn I could simply not believe he was going to get up. You have to feel for the connections of Zafonic but I guess that racing. Roll on the cheque from Mr Willey Hill. Congratulations to all connections, it must be a dream come true. I have put a copy of the race below.

Slim Debut

Slim Amarillo made his long awaited debut on Saturday at Monmore in a Puppy Open. It didn't seem that long ago Dave and I sent the mother Blue Amarillo out to Paul McCusker to start her career as a brood. Slim (Sox) was the dog selected from the 1st litter. Lance Burford and Jason Seddon purchased 25% each following his good trials. Sadly Lance could not get a trial at Monmore so he had to go without a look at the track. After breaking well and showing some super pace he looked sure to finish in 2nd place before being fought by two different dogs. He ran on to finish 4th and we just have to hope the events don't effect him personally. I had a super few hours at the track in the company of Dave where we managed to back a few nice winners.

Jameson Sprint

Jameson had a two dog sprint at the schooling track last week whilst I was away on holiday. Very slow away as would be expected, ran the bend very green and galloped home well. His clock was 18.85 which is well inside qualifying time which is 19.10. He won the trial handily enough. He will have another mixed sprint trial next week and Paul has provisionally booked the tranporter for 27th.

Paul reported Jameson in great form following his return to the schooling track yesterday morning. Handslipped on the bend he did everything expected. He will return to the track next Sunday for a sprint trial. Could well be finally heading over within the next 3 weeks.

Lisa's Invader (The Prince) proved he was no back number when taking a very tough S2 this afternoon in 38.50. Once away there was no danger! The winning margin for 6 lengths ! This was his 22nd career win from 98 starts. He was now won a race in 4 different years. A truly magical owning experience. Co-owner Ray may have put another business to the wall in London as he returned at 3/1.

Great Night out at Monmore Green

The family were guests of Ladbrokes on Saturday night at Monmore. The food, drink, surroundings and company made it a night to remember. It was made even better as we were were lucky to have a few winners. Lisa's Invader was honoured for winning 3 races in row which the boys loved going up for the presentation. He ran in the race before and was just beaten when staying on strong. Many thanks to all the staff and especially Richard Brankley the Track Manager.

Still no luck with finding Avenue Guide a new home despite sending plenty of mails out and distributing posters. Also known as Sammy, this thee-year-old is a small, black dog who has won 6 times throughout his career on the track. Sammy is currently housed at racing kennels near Coventry but will need a new home on retirement. Sammy is a very friendly and loving greyhound and is great with all ages, including children. He will come with a collar and lead, vaccinated, wormed, six weeks pet insurance and a supply of food to help. Injury News

Jameson pulled up badly on the gallop this morning. Paul's first reaction was that he had broken his leg. The dog was in a lot of pain when he got to him. Paul took him straight off to the Vet where he was x-rayed where it showed he had dislocated his due claw. Bad news but not as bad as first thought. He will have to have it removed but not for a week as the swelling is very big. He will be out of action for about a month pending how the operation goes. There will be no long term problems because of this injury.

Bandicoot Tipoki takes Puppy Derby

Bandicoot Tipoki (4-5F) continued the impressive run of Charlie Lister's kennel when duly landing the odds in the £12,500 Ladbrokes Puppy Derby final over 480m at Monmore. I was asked to take the presentation photographs by Richard Brankley the Track manager as Steve Nash is recovering from a minor operation. The 4/1 odds taken before the competition started looked very generous, many thanks VC!

72 Hours - Tipoki, Kato and Socks

I've had a couple great days after breaking up from work on Thursday night. I picked up Kerryman Ray at 5pm then headed straight forMonmore. Sadly the Prince couldn't win for his visit after suffering trouble in running. We did get to see two track records set by Bandicoot Tipoki and Farloe Lee. Tipoki looks like a very special dog but I'm sure he will be made to battle all the way in next Thursdays Final. On Friday we made our annual pilgrimage to Cheltenham where we witnessed Kato Star win his second Cheltenham Gold Cup, what a horse. I managed to backed 2 winners at 5/1 and 10/1 which made the week a winning one. There was no stopping come Saturday as we set off to see Lance Burford and Slim Amarillo (Socks) who had arrived the previous weekend. We met up with Sock's Co-owner Dave Yanez . Socks looks to have settled in well and I took a few snaps for his website. Socks will trial at Coventry on Tuesday.

Iceman Brutus heading Stateside

Jameson improved 0.60 seconds on his trial this morning. Which is 25 spots inside qualifying. A cracking run for the pup. He will have one more solo trial before going in company. He is leaving plenty of time in the boxes so there should more even more to come. The second sectional is much better than the first one, he is not pleased with early pace being such a big lad. Promising progress.

Jameson clocked 19.55 first time out of the traps this week. Qualifying time is 19.20. Paul would expect him to do that time next week. The first time in the traps is hoping for 3 things :- they don't turn in them, they chase hard and come home sound, he did all three. Paul was very pleased. He is such a long dog he only just fits in the traps. He will trial again next week. Can I ask all members to pay £50 in to the account as I will need to pay Paul the extra 2 months he has stayed and transport in 3 weeks time. Thanks.

Monmore Puppy Derby Round 1

A cracking night of Puppy races this evening at Monmore. The track was very busy with lots of high profile owners and trainers. I met up with old friends Steve Murphy and Carly Phillpott and had a good catch up before Lance Burford came down to catch up on the news. Rather than review each race I'll post the Semi Final draw and my comments.
1^st semi final:
1 Lethal Ace - Rapid pace to 3rd bend, did he get home ?

2 Greenwell Cool - Will need to find some early to figure.

3 Centurion Enry - High class contender, had early trouble but chased leader down.

4 Droopys Kez - Will need to come away from this draw, pacey.

5 Freedom Emma - Was smashed straight out the boxes, stuck to task well but will need to improve lots.

6 Magna Venturer - Shaped up well after poor start, could have really traffic problems next week.

2^nd semi final:

1 Kinda Ready - Really took the eye, stuck to guns well.

2 Bandicoot Tipoki - Missed break then showed breathtaking pace. A lot of running probably cost him dear.

3 Eden Rocket -Will need a miracle in this heat.

4 Aughacasla Jesse - Great run from tough heat, will need to do everything right next week.

5 Droopys Cadel - I think the draw could very well suit, in the hottest Semi Final.

6 Droopys Jervis (m) - Stunning debut, my only bet of night, will need to fly out, possibilities.

3^rd semi final: 1 Eden Dom-Veers left at boxes, ran on very strong.

2 Bawna Elsa - Led a mile from a bad draw, will need to again.

3 Droopys Quinta (m) -Lacks early toe, could run on late.

4 Farloe Lee (m) - Didn't really catch the eye.

5 Bush Paddy (m) - Took his time to get going but looks in great order, 28.00 does not lie.

6 Kinda Free (m) - Ran on very strong, could struggle from the six box.

Bandicoot Tipoki was our Antepost bet at 4/1 and I'm still happy with that, he showed super pace down the back and after mising the break. Chris Allsopp's Droopys Jervis was my only bet of night and that paid 7/2 on the night.

Monmore Puppy Derby Entries

This Thursday is one of my favourite evenings racing of the year. The Monmore Puppy Derby once again looks to have brought together a fantastic group of 6 heats of which 3 will progress from each. It seems odd how some dogs have been included when dogs on the reserved list have quicker times on their card. The recent Trafalgar Cup winner Freedom Emma is on that reserve list. Roll on Thurday.

Steve Murphy, Kewells owner kindly dropped me a update which is very interesting. He has now covered a few of Liam Dowlings best bitches and has just sired his first ngrc winner here , Eeza Red Devil, whilst it is a moderate start there are a couple of really nice pups coming through. A 14 month old pup has joined Pat Rosney whom is an aeroplane. Given Droopys Woods passing he has the pedigree and talent to become a direct replacement given these early pups take off.

I couldn't make the Puppy Derby Trial Stakes last night as I was kindly given a ticket on the half way line to watch Manchester Utd v Blackburn. You can't really turn down a ticket to watch the European Champions can you ? Kinda Ready looks to have firmly made himself the ante-post favourite after winning in 28.01!! What a run. Litter sister Kinda Free landed the Divsion 2 Stake when winning in 28.79. Other Trial Stakes winners were Kaboot Bluebird (Mel Baker) 28.72, Thurlesbeg Nonie (W Critchley), Lethal Ace (S Cahill) 28.50. From all those who ran tonight Kinda Ready is one that looks a cut above. This week will see a few more dogs have their finals trials before the competition kicks off. Is there one in there to give Ready a race ?

Droopys Woods

It was very sad to hear that Droopys Woods has passed away after a short illness. Bred by the Dunphys and owned by friend Paul Ephremsen he landed the Gymcrack Puppy Championship in 2000 at Hall Green. After retirement through a wrist injury he stood back with the Dunphys before heading to ZigZag Kennels. He was a great success at Stud and his off spring included Droopys Shearer and Ballymac Kewell. This picture was taken at Coventry when he returned from Ireland. He pulled by arms out and won't take his eyes off the track. RIP Old boy !

Socks Flies Again

Socks showed exceptional early pace in his trial on Tuesday going over 40 spots quicker than what we hoped for. He will now have a mixed trial next week and if all goes to plan we may send him to a UK based trainer. At the current stage we are unsure whether he will stay 525, if he does he could be extremely promising.

Ted Megaw has successfully purchased a super new puppy called Droopys Jervis. Jervis, a August 2007 pup bred Droopys Scolari x Classic Wings, has joined the Chris Allsopp kennel after clocking 28.42(+30) at trials this morning. Westmead Wings looks like a name to remember after he clocked 15.41 1st time, others that look Puppy Derby bound are Steel Diamond 28.64, Glenard Sunrise 28.37 and Rackethall Hero 28.81.

Monmore Puppy Derby 2009

As previous years I will try and post regular updates up to the Puppy Derby including the Trial Stakes and through out the competition. The Martin Burt trained Proud Reward missed tonight's Trial Stakes as he was reported not just himself. Reward looks to be one of home trained contenders competition having gone from A3 to win a Puppy Open at the home track. Kinda Ready trained by Mark Wallis set the tongues wagging on Friday as they recorded 28.24 winning by 3 1/2 lengths. Andy Johnson looks to have a nice dog called Droopys Jervis that did 28.63. After seeing many Open Races at the track I'm still convinced you must have a trial at the track before going for a race. Back in 2006 Droopys Electric came over after winning a competition at Shelbourne Park and ended up on the first boat back having being knocked out in the first round without having a trial. Droopys Electric presence in the field enabled us to get a good price about Ballymac Charly. There was three trial stakes tonight with Eden Dom taking Division 1 in 28.24. He is bang railer so could struggle if he gets a poor draw. Farloe Firefox ran a stinker in the second Trial Stake when a shocking start cost him all chance. Blonde Dee kicked clear off the second and won from a fast finishing Farloe Can Do in 28.41.This was a smart performance by the son of Hades Rocket as it was the pups first ever race. The final Trial Stake winner Bawna Elsa trained by Chris Allsopp. Elsa showed some rapid early pace to lead round and take advantage of Droopys Arshavin's lack of experience at the track to win in 28.41. Bawna Elsa is actually for sale on Chris Allsopps's website.

Ruby is currently contesting the Arc at Swindon which as reached the Semi Final stage tonight. The sport needs owners like Paul and should do all it can to hold on such owners. Good Luck Paul.

Bomber Collects

Bomber Bailey landed the Springbok crown on Tuesday night at Wimbledon for us at a whopping 14/1 !! A 14/1 winner goes down well on any day of the week. As soon as he hit the front there was no dangers and the dog was on his best behaviour. Flying Winner took the Marathon race for Big Harry Findlay. She is an amazing bitch and has now won 28 of her 39 races. I would like to try and see her run in the flesh this year.

Bookies clean up at Clonmel

Kingsmill Dynamo, trained in the south of Wexford by Aidan Roche, raced to a decisive victory over Colina Damask in the final of the Boylesports Derby at Powerstown Park. The festival probably suffered it's worth weather for a long time. At times the slippers hut was not visiable!

Kingsmill Dynamo took on Galway giant-killer Colina Damask in the deciding buckle, but this proved an anti-climax when the Dynamo took control from the slips and led up by no less than five lengths.

Throughout the Boylesports Derby there were a succession of shocks. Three of the four-strong Matthews team made their exits at this stage and were joined on the sidelines by their kennelmate Wallace Green on Tuesday afternoon. Coolcastle Point took over as favourite after the third round, only to be withdrawn before the quarters.
He was replaced by King Saunders at the head of the market, but he in turn was upstaged by Colina Damask. Shocks were also a feature in the Hotel Minella Oaks and this classic ended with Fortuna, trained by Charlie Faul for Brigid Frank, upsetting the odds laid on Whimsical Lady when holding on by half a length from a short slip.

I selected five against the field in both competitions yet the furthest one went was the Quarter Final. I imagine there are some pretty rich bookies come the end of the week.

Jameson had his first gallop since 2008 this morning. Paul reported his action seemed much easier on the eye and the rest has done him the world of good. He has a lovely big back on him and is currently 36.6 kg. All being well be will be back on the schooling track in two weeks and hopefully with us in six.

Our antepost punting has started well this year with a juicy 20/1 place in the Birmingham Cup, we entered the fray of the Springbok on Saturday. Clonmel Coursing Preview

The heavy ground at Powerstown, Clonmel will test all the greyhounds that head for the ultimate test tomorrow. Heavy rain in the region has supposed to have made the ground seriously testing and the trainers will have to call on all their skills to keep there charges fresh. Brendan Matthews is seeking his 8th Derby win and has four runners ready this year. Three litters have dominated the season as I have written about from the very season. Carrick Sam and Fiery Mary have five of their litters in either the Derby or Oaks, whilst Uptown Smurf has four Oaks qualifiers. The betting ring will be full of people willing back their opinions to the hilt so here is my five against the field for both Classics.

Boylesports Derby

Wallace Green - Strongest form in the field, landed the Corn Na Feile after trial stake.
King Saunders - My tip from the start of the season, I'm hoping his poor run against older dogs was just an off day.
Droopys Galvin - Serious pace but need to come away from slips better.
Catunda Donie - Well backed by connection who reached semi final last year.
Fullerton - Owned by Lixnaw pal Paudie "Whisky and Red" Lyons, off colour at Christmas, meets the other Lixnaw dog in round 1.

Newinn Droopy - My tip from early season, will love the hill.
Uptown Smurf - Has an all age win on her CV, should go a long way.
Candles Dripping - A must for the portfolio, won a tough all age bitch at Newcastle West confirming Trial Stake promise.
Cleanaway Smurf - Turned form around after changing kennel, still on the upgrade.
Feora Time - A selection at 100/1, Ray tried to buy this girl at Christmas. Clocked some serious times, may just shake a few up.

His Royal Highness Jameson

On the Jameson front not so good news at the moment. His cut on his pad is still not great and is struggling to heal. My mate said it's like a pair of old worn our shoes. Paul has to carry him on to the grass, fair lump of weight to carry around. He has developed in to a cracking leggy dog who has all the assets, looks fantastic. He very much has his royal attitude as previous and thinks he has already won a Derby! He does like the staff to know he is the man, always letting them know he is about. Dave thinks he would need a bit of personal attention if he went into a big kennel, could well be lost without this. Something for us to think about.

Slim Amarillo our first pup out of Blue Amarillo is going nicely under the care of Mr McCusker in Northern Ireland. He recorded a time well inside grading on his first run our of the traps and is improving stacks after every run. His litter sister has gone to Hall Green and has been flying at the schooling track. This morning I couldn't believe my eye's as I skimmed the Racing Post to see Ninja Jamie highlighted by Richard Birch at 33/1 for the English Derby. This impeccably bred dog out of Farloe Oyster murdered a quality field by over 8 lengths when winning the Yarmouth Derby and taking the track record at the same time. After speaking to the lads we decided to trouble Mr Hill for a few quid each way only to quoted 40/1!!!

The highly touted Bandicoot Tipoki was well and truly put his place last Monday up at Nottingham by the Steve race home bred Head iton Ellis. His time of 30.31 for 500 metres marks him down as a serious dog for follow for 2009. No Fear of Knocking Zafonic

You had to admire the pace of Fear Zafonic as he ran away with the first Category One title of 2009 by taking the £6,500 final of the Birmingham Cup over 480m at Perry Barr.

My antepost bet Mountjoy King led in to the first corner until Zafonic bustled his way to to front forcing us to just count our each way money. Never in danger afterwards, he pulled away to beat Goldcrest King by four and a half lengths in 28.44sec, with early leader Mountjoy Gold a further length and a half away back in third.Fingers crossed for Affleck Elite who looked to have suffered a nasty injury and the run to the first bend.

I managed to get to Perry Barr with my old buddy Dave Yanez on Friday. I was very keen to see Derby favourite Fear Zafonic in action. He looked to be needing the run slightly from a winter off as Affleck Elite beat him on the line for a short-head victory in fastest time of night, 28.31sec.

The Mark Wallis-trained Eye Onthe Brave landed the first heat just beating the fast finishing Killough Belles. Wallis also won Heat 3 with Goldcrest King. Little Jig really caught eye when winning her heat before the Paul Sallis trained Driving Up Pal won the next heat. In the last heat of the night my antepost bet Mountjoy Gold (20/1) was just beaten by Shaneboy Luke but qualified for next Friday Semi Final's.

The Prince got a face full of sand and a split web in his tough A2 tonight at Monmore. On very slow going he got in all sorts of trouble but battled on hard to finish forth. Dog to follow Special Foxi landed some nice bets for the followers when winning very well in the A5. Two to follow from tonight's meeting are Rostov Star and puppy Swift Expert, both ran well in poor outside going.

Looking at the Sire statistics for 2008 for England & Ireland is looks like a number of the younger sires are flying up the table. Crash (pictured left) looks to one to side with as his young offspring are looking to be very precocious. Only last week Tip and Tin won the 50,000 euro National Puppy Stake at Shelbourne Park, by the looks of it Crash could be rising even higher next year. Top Honcho remains No.1 with son Droopys Vieri chasing hard in behind. Droopys Maldini is just one place behind Droopys Kewell in 6th. With Ballymac Maeve in 12th I'm guessing we could loose another of the old guard our the top ten next year. With two pups due for graduation out of Yeah Man and Boherduff Light the future is looking very hopeful.

This was a funny year with the dogs, Wathamstow's closure was a reminder to us all that unless the industry looks after itself more tracks will face closure. Lisa's Invader proved age was no barrier to success as he recording ten wins for thirty one starts. Some record for a dog turning four in February 2009. Avenue Guide had a tough win just four times from thirty nine starts. The 480 metre trip is a little to tough for him. The year ahead promises alot with two pups due to graduate from Mr McCusker's Northern Ireland Kennels. Lets hope those two are as honest and fun as the Prince. Happy New Year.

Martin Burt takes Christmas Kennel Stake

A enjoyable mid day session of racing at Monmore Green today. There was not a space to be had on the car park and the stadium appeared to be packed to capacity. To get to the front of the queue to place a bet felt like you had backed a winner given the achievement. Mart Burt brought home the money in the Christmas Kennel Stake. With two in the final it was difficult to split the pair. As the traps rose the Burt trained Questhouse Leigh recorded the fastest sectional of day and was away and gone. The winning time was 29.08 and the distance was 4 and 1/2 lengths. The Open races saw smart performances from Swift Jade, Big Cats, Killough Belles, Cabra Fly and Droopys Ivanovic. Lisa's Invader in Boxing Day Action

With the beatiful clear weather today I managed to get a few images of Lisa's Invader in action today. Despite being in the form of his life he was in against some of the best A2 dogs at tracks that had been contesting Open races around the county. With a slow start his sectional was still 4.24 which compares very well to Cabra's Sky 4.22 that won the Open race the race after. He ran on very well to finish a brave 4th.

I spent the morning with the lads up at the on fire Martin Burt's kennels. He been landing trebles and fourtimers non stop. The Proud litter are really showing the potential they promised. Proud Reward (White & Blue dog pictured)is at the top of table at the moment. He won a very tough A2 yesterday. The other two dogs Rooney and Ronaldo are flying whilst I'd expect Mags in win next time out. There is one bitch who has not run yet called Proud Guest. She makes her debut on Boxing Day. Could be anything!! Anyway, we took the Prince, Avenue and Foxi out for a winter walk. The Boxing card looks very tasty, the Prince goes up to A2!!!

BAGS Racing

The Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service or BAGS as it's affectionately known has been around almost as long as betting shops themselves and is now 40 years old.

You have to weigh up all the pro's and the cons when placing your dog with a contracted trainer at a BAGS track. You may loose a bit of control with your dogs but the prizemoney does pay the kennel bill. You can't have it all ways.

For those who don't know, BAGS is the company that negotiates the contracts with greyhound tracks to supply live racing to the nation's betting shops via SIS, and it's certainly come a long way since those heady first days of 1967. Way back then the service comprised of just four tracks and acted purely as a safety net in the winter when horse-racing was abandoned to give us punters something to bet on.

Through the years the service has grown on an almost yearly basis to the extent that BAGS now stage a race roughly every seven minutes throughout the day from 11:00 to 21:30 - that's well over 80 races a day.

Over the years many tracks have come and gone, with the closure of Walthamstow, like Hackney one of the mainstays of the service, a particularly sad loss.

Many people see BAGS racing as just a numbers game. Six dogs, same colours every time, perfect for a quick punt without any need to know anything about the form, and maybe that's why it's been so successful - nearly one in five bets placed in the shops is on a greyhound race. Others complain of its repetitive nature, citing every race as being deadly competitive - the term 3/1 the field is often banded about, and that nearly every race is over the bog standard four bend trip. Personally I'd like to see a bit more variety. Races for Open Class dogs seem to go down well when they're included, and just because a short-priced favourite is included it doesn't mean it will win.

But that aside BAGS remains a good punting medium, and often those so called impossible races are not quite as mind blowing as they first appear. I'd always suggest keeping a close eye on any track bias, including when it suits front runners or finishers, and staying on the right side of improving puppies and bitches returning from season. Stay away from short price good things, remember the tracks get bonus's for beaten favourites!! I still love trying to find one or two on a Monday or Friday afternoon.

Monmore Puppy Derby off TV again

The premier puppy competition "the Monmore Puppy Derby" will not be shown on Sky again this year as the GRA thought it was wise the stage the Trainers Championship just two days before. With all the fastest dogs in the country probably running in that one off night the Monmore Finals night card who have not represented the quality card Monmore can produce hence the decision to not show the race yet again. The GRA is maximising their grip and control on our sport without no thought to the long term consequences. Another sad day for our sport.

Sadly no runners over the weekend or today and the lack of the Sporting Press has stopped me compiling a coursing update.

Monmore Bitch Takes the Oaks

Meenala Amy (Droopys Shearer-Lassana Jenny Dec-2005) provided a fairytale Classic success for first-season Monmore based trainer Kim Billingham with a game front-running performance to land the £6,000 williamhill.co.uk Oaks over 480m at Wimbledon on Tuesday. Some early trouble at the corner allowed Meenala Amy to race into a very healthy lead along the back stretch and, although the demanding run-in must have seemed a long way home for her connections, she always looked likely to hold on even if a flying Ravello Drive reduced the distance to a neck behind the 28.99sec winner. Amy who started in A3 at Monmore proves the grading strength has few equals.

Maeve the deal

When these new sires become available you have to be dubious. When Ballymac Maeve started at stud I looked twice at his status. As a race dog he had had 10 races winning five of them. The bottom line of his pedigree contain Blonde Returns but had can also apply to many other dogs that have not made it at stud. He have been given every chance to prove himself and proven it was been well worth doing. Already he has thrown Ballymac Under, Ballymac Ruso, Me Buddy, Confident Kermit and plenty more. With his top offspring now hitting 14% he is attracted the tip broods from around Ireland including Farloe Oyster, Aughavas, Alexandrova and Shelbourne Kate!! The future can only get better.

The Prince (Lisa's Invader) recorded his 21st career win on Thursday evening for us in 28.56 (+10). Trapping in front he never saw another dog as he defeated a classy A3 field. His win in the last race topped a cracking night out with Syms and the Silver Fox. Sadly Avenue ran shocking on Friday.

I spent yesterday morning up at Martin Burt's kennels. Plenty of good debate and humour flying around. The lads reported if Ballymac Ruso trapped he could well go close to the track record. Connections were sure he would only have to trap any where near to the level he can at other tracks to win. Last last he seriously pinged and recorded a split of 4.07!! Once away he showed awesome pace to equal the track record of 27.79. Over in Dublin there was a cracking performance by Paddy's Iflookscouldkill who won well in 42.06. Avenue Guide is out on Monday in BAGS action. The lads in the kennels was split whether it would be a win for Avenue or kennelmate Tolka Flash. At 5.38 at Monday we will find out. The Prince is in good form and was enjoying a big bone on his own. He should be out on Thursday evening.

Dan Brassil's Tupele landed the All aged Bitch in Doon last weekend. Despite some serious weather the coursing was reported to be very good. Newin Droopy, another of the Droopys Saunders x Fiery Mary litter, seriously impressed when winning the Oaks Trial Stake. The length of the long field at Clonmel will only bring the best out of her. This weekends Cup at Newcastle West looks mouth watering. All in the hat are Johnny Casanova, Catunda Ashmore, Lochbo Butch and the Abberdorney puppy winner Fullerton. This is some test for a young dog. Fingers crossed he runs well and comes off sound. The current Oaks favourite Candles Dripping, winner at Westport, takes on all ages bitches. In the field are Multiblonde and Ballymac Julie. My special interest this weekend is with the Lixnaw based Herhairwasblack that runs in the Oaks Stake. Owned by the legendary Lixnaw Donal O'Connell, should they beat Patsy Bryne's bitch in the first round it could be a good weekend.

I always enjoy following the Comerford Cakes National Puppy Stake at this time of year. The competition never fails to throw up serious pups to follow. It was pleasing to see another Yeah Man pup take off, Faypoint Man won well in 28.58. Fastest time went to Fawn Express who record 28.55. If you fancy Fawn Express he is for sale at just 50,000 euros. Ballymac Under dipped under the sprint record at Tralee on Monday. His 17.41 is an amazing time and should put him spot on for the Kingdom Derby. Sad to see two large American tracks being given their closure notices. Despite every dog being rehomed off the tracks the anti-greyhound lobby recorded yet another victory against our sport.

2 / 2 Crafty & Castle Strike

Last week's confident selections, Crafty Hugo & Castlemartyr, both won well and are now both well set for the Champion Stakes come February. Crafty Hugo easily added the all age stake at Knockgraffon, whilst Castlemartyr beat my good friend Johnny O'Keefe's Daleroad Champ in the Final at Rathkeale. News emerged on Tuesday that Hugo will not run again until the National meeting as he picked up a muscle injury in his hind leg. The Bexhill Eoin x Carrick Sam litter threw another Trial Stake winner last week. Wallace Rock gave Brendan Matthews his 4th Derby qualifier after winning the Trial Stake in Enniscorthy. He is just 25/1 for the Derby. Litter sister, Tess Durbiville was just beaten in the Oaks Stake at Balbriggan. One to keep an eye on come February is Maytown Matty. He won well at Rathcormac, his clocks were well above average and is also fast away from slips.

I spent yesterday morning up at Martin's kennels. I took all the Proud pups out two by two. They all seem mad keen on spotting the local wildlife. They were a lot of pheasants out for their winter stroll. One of bitches almost pulled me straight through the hedgerow in pursuit. After getting home I glanced through the Monmore evening card. The card was scattered with dogs that cost well in excess of £10,000 running for about £100. The Open race included Magna Dave, Shadayid, Ballymac Ruso, Burnpark Champ, Canary Max and Marbeck Wonder. These bunch of super bred dogs were running for just £175. The chances are a couple of these might well land a prize of £7,500 once, one may win a classic, but if you add the cost of buying a dog of this quality, training costs, transport to the track is it really worth such an investment. The likes of small owner landing such a dog now is now impossible. I'm now at a stage I'd rather win an A1 at Monmore than an run of mill open any where else. There was a nice dog called Lefanta Fly make is debut last night in an A3, this dog should seriously better than his running last night and is one to follow.

King Saunders at Kilrush

Derby favourite King Saunders (Droopys Saunders x Fiery Mary) takes to all age company this weekend at Kilrush. I'm sure his entry will guarantee a big attendance. There are two litters standing out this winter to date Bexhill Eoin x Carrick Sam Mar 07 and the Droopys Saunders x Fiery Mary's. The Carrick Sams litter has three Trial Stake winners qualified for Clonmel whilst this weekend see's comrades Tess Durbville contest the Oaks Stake at Balbriggan and Wallace Rock in Derby Stake at Enniscorthy. The Fiery Mary litter are going equally well and Tiny Mary is in the Oaks Stake at Knockgrafton and Newinn Droopy at Kilrush. The other litter I watching is a Bexhill Eoin x Uptown Smurf. This litter contains a seriously fast dog in Fingue Smurf. He was beaten an injured dog in the Final at Edenderry but could well storm back if 100% at Rathcormac. The two solid winners for the weekend are Craftyy Hugo and Castlemartyr, they are both expected to win in their respective Cup on the way to the Champion Stakes.

Avenue drops a grade

Avenue Guide looks to have been given a good chance by the grader at Monmore tomorrow at 5.57pm. Let's hope he bounces out and gets a clear run.

Nice to see Martin's Proud Rooney strike tonight in 29.29. He looks a lovely green pup and should fly through the grades.

One to follow from tonight racing is Chris Allsopps Nirphania. A Cork winner in 28.71 has some how got into A5 at Monmore. He looked as he needed the run seriously tonight.

My man in north told me of pup to watch out for, his name is Farloe Venturer. From the same sire as Jameson, Yeah Man, he made it four wins from four races last night at Lifford. Last night he went round in 28.96 in his first run over four bends. Looking at his races on Data he does lack that little bit of early toe. His full sister Hather for Pat also looks a nice bitch, 1 race 1 win 29.48.

Jameson headed to vet this morning with his other kennel mates to be checked over. The vet advised Paul that he still has a month's growing to do and should be put away for a month. He thought the stress of being schooled on the track at this stage could come a bit quick for him. Following this advice jameson will stay off the track until mid December where he will then complete his schooling. Hopefully he will be joining us at the end of January. Hope that's ok with all the members. I'm still chasing payments from Heather, Colin, Mark and Brian that is due from 25th October. Can I ask you to mail me with an update please.

This Sunday will mark the half way point in the 2008/9 Irish Coursing Season. The meeting midweek at New Ross saw as tipped Droopys Galvin romp home in the Derby Stake. This son of the Droopys Saunders x Fiery Mary could well be lifting the Derby title in Clonmel. Last weekend saw Derby King Brendan Matthews land a double at Carlow. The local lads are heading to Ballyduff where it looks like winning will be very tough given the very wet weather. I'll have an eye on Call Biddy in the all aged bitch as I tried to buy her at the end of last season. Just back from the cracking evening with the Dave Yanez. I always thinks it's important to keep learning and with Dave now fully enrolled in his studies he kindly let me pick his brain for a few hours. Among the things we covered was the use of video with pictures. The below video was put together as we caught up on all the latest news. Hope you agree it's a great piece of work. I've started on doing some changes and upgrades to Martin Burt's website. He prefers to do his updates a little less often. I've just finished the first page and will work through the site for the coming days. Hopefully the weather will be kind at the weekend when I'm due to take some photographs for him. He looks to have a lovely young litter of pups coming through. One of the bitches, Proud Guest, recorded 29.23 4th in a box on Tuesday at trials and litter brother Proud Ronaldo won easy first time out last Thursday in 29.23. Many thanks to Mr Yanez for his media skills support. I'm going to introduce a new blog on site that can be updated by myself, Martin or Ginge. Pleased to report that the Prince seemed back like his usual self today, bouncing out the kennels and eating a big lunch after his morning exercise. I have posted a few video's of races in his early career. If you would have had £100 on him everytime he ran you would have won £875.

The Prince (Lisa's Invader) stunned us again tonight when recording a unique hatrick of wins at Monmore last night in 28.91. His time was actually faster the quality packed A1 that took place the race after. We called up to kennels this morning after football to take him for a short walk. Despite his star status he was not quite himself and a little off colour. Perhaps a couple of very quick runs has taken it's toll on him and he just fancied a Sunday morning on his bed.

Postsrcipt for last weekend. News is also reaching me of a raw novice getting involved in North Kerry coursing circles Margaret (aka Mrs Ryall in waiting (6/4 from 20’s with Paddy Power for a ring to appear before Clonmel 2009)) who was seen sporting a very clean pair of wellies as she dished out the soup and sandwiches on the Saturday/Sunday isn’t it great to see a bit of glamour coming into the game!

I believe there was many uttering the eternal words on Sunday evening “………………another good man gone”! Only time will tell I suppose if Mr Ryall’s emphasis moves away from coursing in the coming seasons.

Lixnaw Report & Weekend Outlook

From what I have heard from the lads in Lixnaw and reading the Sporting Press the meeting at Gransha, Lixnaw sounds to have been of the highest order. Having personally witnessed some of the hare catching and the hare husbandry on the Saturday I was over 2 weeks before the meeting the boys seem to be surpassing themselves by the year. The hares were described as "brilliant"and the meeting was run off in record time. Crafty Hugo advertised his Champion Stakes when winning the O'Carroll-O'Connor Cup.Paddy landed both of the Duffer Stakes. The other local lads dogs didn't run so well on the Sunday after some promising courses on the Saturday(Pirate lost in 2nd round). Best of all was Tomdickandharry that reached the Derby Semi Final. Elsewhere Razor Ashmore missed his comeback leaving the opportunity for Micro Mover to win. I doubt if we saw the Derby or Oaks winner last weekend however I have noted that Bexhill Eoin has recorded 7 Trials Stakes winners over the two weekends.

My 3 to follow this weekend are the Drumbane Rock to win the Cup in New Ross. The Abbeydorney winner should make fitness count and qualify for the Champion Stakes. At the same meeting another of the Droopys Saunders x Fiery Mary litter called Droopys Galvin makes his debut and could be another one of the litter heading to Clonmel. My final fancy is for Eshwary Brae (Ashmore View x Eshwary Girl) at Cappoquin.
